When we talk about the success of our schools, the conversation often turns to teachers, principals, and board members. Their leadership and dedication are undeniably vital, but we must also recognize that there is a team of individuals who work quietly behind the scenes to keep our schools running smoothly—our classified employees. These men and women may not always stand in front of a classroom, but their contributions are every bit as essential to the education and well-being of our children.
Think about the first person many students see each day—the school bus driver. Before the first bell rings, bus drivers are already hard at work, safely transporting children from every corner of our county. They face early mornings, long routes, and the tremendous responsibility of protecting precious lives on the road. They are the first smile that greets a child in the morning and the last reassuring voice they hear before returning home.
When students step into the school building, it is our custodians who ensure that classrooms, hallways, and restrooms are clean, safe, and welcoming. Their work may go unnoticed until something goes wrong, but day after day they create an environment that is healthy and conducive to learning. In a time when safety and sanitation have never been more important, their role cannot be overstated.
Our cafeteria staff also plays a central part in the school day. For many children, the meals they receive at school may be the most nutritious of their day. These dedicated cooks arrive early, prepare meals with care, and serve them with kindness. They provide not just food, but comfort, stability, and energy that fuels learning.
We must not forget the instructional aides and classroom assistants who work alongside teachers. They often provide one-on-one support, help struggling students, and ensure that every child feels seen and valued. Their patience and dedication often make the difference for children who need just a little extra attention to succeed.
Maintenance workers, the IT department, and mechanics are equally critical. From keeping heating systems running in the winter to repairing buses to ensuring technology functions properly, their expertise keeps the daily operations of our schools possible. Without them, classrooms would grow cold, buses wouldn’t run, and the learning process would grind to a halt.
As chairman of the board, I want every classified employee to know this: your service is not overlooked. You are an indispensable part of the school family. You provide safety, nourishment, care, and support that allow teachers to teach and students to learn. When we celebrate academic success, athletic achievements, or any accomplishments, you share in that victory because none of it would be possible without the foundation you provide.
Education is not just about textbooks and classrooms—it’s about people working together with a shared goal of giving our children the best future possible. To our classified employees, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude. Your work matters. Our schools are stronger, safer, and more successful because of you.
