Sweet 16 is the ultimate father, son trip

Posted

Hello friends! I hope everyone is doing well. And how about this weather? One day it’s pushing 80 degrees, and the next day we’re waking up to 32 degrees and snow. That’s Kentucky for you!

This week my son, one of his friends, and I will be heading to Lexington for what many people call the greatest show in hoops — the Kentucky High School Boys’ Sweet 16 State Basketball Tournament.

If you’re from Clay County, you’re probably very familiar with Rupp Arena and the success the Clay County Tigers have enjoyed on that court over the years. Some of the greatest moments in our county’s sports history have taken place inside that building, and it’s always special when our community gets to be part of that tradition.

For me personally, this is one of the most rewarding times of the year. There’s just something special about sitting in the stands watching the greatest game on earth and sharing those moments with your son. Those are memories that last a lifetime.

But beyond the excitement on the court, the Sweet 16 also shows just how powerful sports tourism can be. Lexington sees a tremendous economic impact from hosting the tournament each year. Nearly 25,000 fans will pack Rupp Arena for the championship game, and thousands more will attend games throughout the week. People travel from every corner of Kentucky to be there — staying in hotels, eating in restaurants, and visiting local businesses.

Events like this are a perfect example of how sports can drive tourism and bring communities together. It’s something we work hard to build here in Manchester and Clay County with our own festivals, tournaments, and community events throughout the year.

I hope everyone has a great week. Enjoy the basketball, enjoy the warmer weather when it comes back around, and I’ll see you out and about in Manchester.

Much love, Manchester!
