Hoops, Sunshine, and the Economic Boost of Tournament Time

Posted

Hello friends! I hope everyone is doing well. This week is filled with sunshine, and I’ll tell you — that kind of weather is good for the soul. There’s just something about seeing the sun shining over our mountains that lifts spirits and reminds us that spring isn’t too far away.

Next week, the district basketball tournament tips off at Clay County High School, and that always brings an energy you can feel across the entire community. It’s not just about basketball — it’s about people, pride, and yes, the economic impact that comes along with hosting big events here in Manchester.

Think about the numbers for a moment. Our district is made up of five schools, which means 10 teams total when you include both boys and girls. With roughly 15 players on each roster and an average of four spectators per player, you’re already looking at around 600 visitors coming to town just to support student-athletes.

Then you add cheerleaders — and we all know some squads are bigger than the teams themselves — bringing another 700 to 900 people. Factor in bands, coaches, faculty, administrators, student sections, and regular fans, and suddenly Manchester is buzzing for several days straight.

Restaurants fill up. Gas stations see steady traffic. Local shops get more foot traffic. Hotels benefit. That’s what I call a win-win — supporting our kids while also supporting local businesses.

The regional tournament, which features eight teams, is traditionally held in Corbin, and I’ll be honest — I’m not a big fan of that arrangement. Hosting brings a significant economic boost, and year after year that opportunity goes elsewhere instead of rotating through communities that could benefit just as much, especially smaller towns like ours.

Everything in my world revolves around economic impact, and high school sports play a bigger role in that than many people realize. When student-athletes compete, they’re not only representing their schools — they’re helping drive activity that supports jobs and keeps dollars circulating locally.

So as you head out to games next week, remember: you’re cheering on more than just a team. You’re helping create momentum for our community.

Much love, Manchester — I’ll see you at the gym.
