Smith dead following attempted home invasion

MANCHESTER, KY. On September 16, 2023, at approximately 0145 hours KSP Post 11 was notified of a shooting on US 421 N in Manchester, Clay County Sheriff’s Office initially responded to the scene and requested KSP assistance.

The preliminary investigation revealed Jason E. Smith 44 years old of Manchester, Ky was trying to break into a residence when a male subject residing at the residence confronted him at the front door. A physical altercation took place leading to the male subject shooting Mr. Smith.

Mr. Smith was transported to Advent Health ER in Manchester by Clay EMS where he was later flown by Air Evac to Albert B. Chandler Hospital in Lexington. Mr. Smith succumbed to his injuries. Fayette County Coroner’s Office pronounced Mr. Smith deceased.

An autopsy is scheduled for next date at the Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville. This case will be presented to the Clay County grand jury.

Detective Gay is continuing the investigation he was assisted at the scene by Kentucky State Police personnel and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
