Investigators have identified the man arrested in connection with a deadly shooting that occurred on Christmas Day in rural Stephens County.
According to court records, deputies were called to a residence off County Road 1800 near Meridian, where they discovered Sandra Phelps deceased from a gunshot wound.
Investigators said Phelps was sitting on her front porch with family members when they heard multiple gunshots. Moments later, Phelps collapsed after being struck by a bullet.
During a search of nearby homes, Stephens County deputies made contact with Cody Adams, who told authorities he had received a firearm as a Christmas gift and had been firing it in his backyard.
Court documents indicate that an examination of Adams’ property led investigators to believe one of the rounds traveled beyond his yard and struck Phelps. Authorities noted there were no barriers or structures that would have prevented bullets from leaving the property and reaching nearby homes.
During an interview at the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office, Adams allegedly admitted to firing multiple shots and apologized after being informed that one of the rounds may have caused Phelps’ death.
Adams has been charged with first-degree manslaughter. He is currently free on bond and is scheduled to appear in court in February.
