DELTONA, Fla. — Two young boys are facing serious charges after authorities say they broke into Friendship Elementary School in Deltona and vandalized the library, leaving behind more than $50,000 in damage.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 1 a.m. Sunday after a fire alarm was triggered at the school. When they arrived, they discovered a shattered glass door and extensive damage inside the media center.

Surveillance cameras captured images of the suspects, and the photos were later released to the public. Investigators said the boys’ own mothers recognized them and turned them in to law enforcement.

The suspects, identified as 12 and 13 years old, confessed to the vandalism, Sheriff’s officials said. Deputies reported the boys initially broke into the school during the day, then returned later that night to “look at the damage and cause more.”

Both boys are charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of trespassing on school grounds, criminal mischief, and theft.

Authorities said the case remains under investigation.
