MANCHESTER — The Manchester Tourism Commission voted during a special called meeting Tuesday night to buy out the contract of Executive Director Tim Parks, effectively ending his tenure with the commission immediately.
Tourism Commission Chairman Jamey Mills said the board first hired Sharon Allen as legal counsel before discussing logistics related to the tourism office’s move to Manchester City Hall.
According to Mills, the commission then entered executive session before returning to open session where members approved a motion and second to buy out Parks’ contract.
“Effective immediately, we are paying his contract in full,” Mills said. “His base salary is $72,000, and after taxes whatever that amount comes to, he will be paid in full.”
Mills also stressed that previously announced commitments tied to the Manchester Music Festival would remain intact despite the leadership change.
“Nothing changes with Manchester Music Fest,” Mills said. “It is still funded exactly as we promised.”
Tourism funding is generated through Manchester’s 3% restaurant/lodging tax.
Following the meeting, Parks, who was not at the meeting, released a public statement reflecting on his time with the tourism commission and his departure from the position.
“I have been informed that after tonight’s special called meeting the Manchester Tourism Commission has decided to release me and honor my buyout clause,” Parks said. “I am very grateful for my time serving our citizens and taxpayers of Manchester and Clay County.”
Parks said he agreed with the decision and believed it was the right move following recent controversy surrounding the commission and ongoing scrutiny into tourism operations.
“After a hard few weeks, I’m not sure a working relationship could have been re-established,” Parks said.
Parks, who became one of the most recognizable public faces tied to Manchester tourism efforts in recent years, reflected on his background and his goals during his tenure.
“I hope I was a voice for the voiceless,” he said. “A poor kid from Bright Shade that gave some of the younger generation hope and desire to make our town better. No matter your political or religious beliefs. No matter your socioeconomic status. I wanted ya’ll to have a voice.”
During his time as executive director, Parks frequently promoted downtown events, festivals, kayaking initiatives, community branding efforts and tourism-based economic development projects.
He thanked the tourism board members he served alongside and expressed appreciation for the progress made in Manchester during his tenure.
“I’m grateful for the progress of our city,” Parks said. “I’m truly grateful for our time together. I wish the tourism commission nothing but the best.”
Parks concluded his statement with his signature phrase often used in columns and public appearances.
“Just remember Ol Tim loves you,” he said. “If you ever need me Clay County just remember look up into the sky and Follow The buzzards! Much love Manchester!!”
