Motorists are urged to use caution at Courthouse Hill as the old Becknell Hospital had a roof collapse Tuesday night.
City councilman Earl Owens lives near the site and heard the crash Tuesday night around 10:15 p.m.
"It was loud," he said. "I didn't know what happened and then I started seeing police arriving on scene."
The historic building has two roofs and the upper roof has fallen into the original. The building, now owned by 1 Clay County, will try to be saved, according to 1CC Executive-Director Mike White.
"We want to preserve this building if possible," he said. "Right now we aren't sure the extent of the damage."
Construction crews are on site to attempt to remove the top roof. The road is currently open but may be closed completely on Wednesday.
