Manchester Police Expand Public Safety Efforts With Drone Technology

Posted

MANCHESTER — The Manchester Police Department is expanding its public safety capabilities through the responsible use of drone technology, according to Police Chief Jeff Couch.

Chief Couch said the department is committed to using “every responsible and innovative tool available” to enhance safety and improve service to the community. As part of that effort, officers are now incorporating drones into training and operations.

Recently, Jared Smith, a licensed drone pilot with the department, conducted drone training exercises at Rawlings-Stinson park. The training is part of ongoing efforts to ensure officers are properly prepared to use the technology safely and effectively.

According to Chief Couch, drones offer several advantages for law enforcement. They allow officers to assess potentially dangerous situations from a safe distance, reducing risks to both the public and responding personnel. The technology can also be used to help locate missing persons, monitor large public events, and assist during emergency situations such as natural disasters.

In critical incidents, drones provide real-time aerial information that enhances situational awareness and supports better, safer decision-making by officers on the ground.

Chief Couch emphasized that the department remains committed to transparency, accountability, and the responsible use of technology. He said the addition of drones reflects the department’s dedication to protecting the community while maintaining high standards of professionalism and care.

“The deployment of drones is another step forward in ensuring we serve and protect Manchester with the best tools available,” Couch said.
