LONDON — London Mayor Randall Weddle announced that a Laurel County grand jury has returned a “No True Bill” in the investigation into the December 2024 police shooting of Doug Harless, concluding that no criminal conduct occurred by officers involved.
In a statement released following the grand jury’s decision, Weddle said the finding brings the criminal review of the case to a close and confirms that no charges will be filed against members of the London Police Department.
The investigation into the shooting was conducted by the Kentucky State Police, with the case presented to the grand jury for consideration.
“With the conclusion of the criminal proceedings, the City will now obtain the investigative file and proceed with its internal administrative review of the shooting and the officers’ response to the Harless residence,” Weddle said.
According to the mayor, the purpose of the internal review is to determine whether the officers’ actions were consistent with departmental policies and procedures and to determine whether any administrative action is necessary.
Weddle emphasized that city officials recognize the seriousness of the incident and are committed to ensuring a thorough and transparent process.
“I recognize the seriousness of this incident and remain committed to a thorough, fair, and transparent review process,” he said, adding that the city intends to release its findings to the public once the administrative review is complete.
The mayor also noted that because the matter is the subject of ongoing civil litigation, the city and its officers will refrain from further public comment until the legal process has concluded.
The grand jury’s decision follows months of investigation and review into the fatal shooting, which has drawn significant public attention and prompted legal action by the Harless family.
