PINEVILLE, Ky. – The Lady Tigers captured The Clay County Lady Tigers are headed to the 2A State Tournament. Clay County captured the 2A regional championship at Wasioto Winds Golf Course in Pineville, accomplishing a goal the Lady Tigers had set their sights on after coming up short a season ago.
Lilly Smith led the way for Clay County with a round of 88, while Ally Janutolo followed with a 95. Bailey Gregory turned in a 98, giving the Lady Tigers three golfers under 100 on the day. Adrienne Cornett and Harlee Jackson rounded out the Clay County lineup, each finishing with a 103 as the Lady Tigers put together the performance, they needed to claim the regional title and earn a trip to the 2A State Tournament.
For Coach Amy Janutolo, the championship was especially rewarding after watching her team learn from last years’ experience and return determined to finish the job.
“I’m so proud that this team finally met their goal of making 2A State!” Janutolo said. “We had the ability to do it last year, but I think nerves got the best of us. This year we went in with the goal that if we stayed calm and just shot our average scores, that would be enough to win.” That approach paid off, as the Lady Tigers remained composed at Wasioto Winds and walked away as 2A regional champions.
Before their regional championship performance, Clay County was also in action last Thursday at London Country Club, competing in a conference match against Corbin, North Laurel and South Laurel.
Smith once again paced the Lady Tigers, firing a 41. Janutolo finished with a 47, while Gregory carded a 55. Cornett and Jackson each finished with rounds of 64. Brynn Blevins represented Clay County in junior varsity competition and finished with a 54. With the regional championship now secured, the Lady Tigers will turn their attention toward their next opportunity — competing on the 2A State Tournament stage.
