Clay County Track Athletes Punch Tickets to State Championships

MANCHESTER — Several members of the Clay County High School track and field program are headed to the KHSAA Class 2A State Track and Field Championships after strong performances in Class 2A Region 5 competition.

The Lady Tigers qualified athletes in multiple events, highlighted by the women’s 4x200-meter relay team of Carly Wolfe, McKenna Sowders, Ava Woods and Madison Pendland. The relay squad finished as regional runners-up to earn a trip to the state meet.

Pendland also advanced individually in two field events, qualifying in both the women’s long jump and women’s high jump. Carly Fultz earned a state berth in the women’s discus throw.

On the boys’ side, the Tigers also produced several standout performances.

The men’s 4x800-meter relay team of Stephen Strickland, John David Lipps, Patrick Hensley and Carson Collett secured a state qualification with a strong regional finish.

Collett added an individual regional championship in the men’s 400-meter dash, punching his ticket to Lexington as a Class 2A Region 5 champion.

Jayden Woods qualified for the state championships in both the men’s long jump and men’s high jump. Woods captured a regional championship in the high jump event.

Trenton Maiden also earned a regional runner-up finish in the men’s discus throw to advance to the state meet.

The KHSAA Class 2A Track and Field State Championships are scheduled for Friday, May 22, at the University of Kentucky.
