Students, staff, and community members at two Clay County elementary schools will soon enjoy cooler gymnasiums after the Clay County Board of Education unanimously approved the purchase of new air conditioning units during its regular meeting Monday night.
The board authorized the purchase of HVAC systems for the gymnasiums at Big Creek Elementary and Oneida Elementary, totaling $100,000. The purchase includes a 10-year warranty, and Superintendent William Sexton said work on the project will begin immediately.
"This is an investment in our children and our schools," Sexton said. "Our gymnasiums are used every day for physical education classes, assemblies, athletic events, and numerous community activities. These new units will make those facilities much more comfortable while giving us the peace of mind that comes with a 10-year warranty. We're excited to get this project underway immediately so students, staff, and our communities can begin benefiting from these improvements as soon as possible."
Board member Robin Combs said the improvements will benefit students and visitors alike.
"Our schools are community centers," Combs said. "Whether it's a ballgame, a school program or another event, people spend a lot of time in these gyms. This is something that will improve the experience for everyone who uses these facilities."
Board member Anthony Lovett said the purchase reflects the board's continued emphasis on providing students with quality learning environments.
"We've made it a priority to improve our facilities across the district," Lovett said. "When our students have comfortable, well-maintained schools, it creates a better atmosphere for learning and extracurricular activities. I'm proud we're able to continue making those investments."
Veteran board member Leewood Cornett said the board remains committed to improving school facilities throughout Clay County.
"Our responsibility is to take care of these buildings for today's students and for future generations," Cornett said. "These are improvements that will serve our schools for many years, and the 10-year warranty helps protect the taxpayers' investment. It's another example of the board continuing to improve every school in our district."
The project is expected to begin immediately, with the new HVAC systems providing a more comfortable environment for students, faculty, athletic events, and community gatherings once installation is complete. The approval continues the board's ongoing commitment to modernizing district facilities and enhancing students' educational experience across Clay County.
