Beloved Educator Sherry Bush Whitaker Passes Away

Posted

MANCHESTER, Ky. — The Clay County school community is mourning the loss of Sherry Bush Whitaker, a longtime Manchester Elementary School physical education teacher, who passed away Monday after a courageous battle with cancer.

Whitaker devoted her life to education, coaching, and encouraging students across several schools in Clay County. Known for her enthusiasm, compassion, and unwavering spirit, she touched the lives of countless children during her decades-long career.

Clay County Superintendent William Sexton said Whitaker’s dedication and positive influence will be deeply missed.

“Mrs. Whitaker was more than just a teacher — she was a mentor, a coach, and a friend to her students and colleagues,” Sexton said. “Her love for children and her passion for education were evident every single day. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and service that will live on in the lives of the students she inspired.”

Manchester Elementary Principal Sheila Hurd said the school community is heartbroken but grateful for the years they shared with her.

“Sherry had a gift for making every child feel special,” Hurd said. “She encouraged her students to be their best — not only in the gym but in life. Her energy, laughter, and caring nature made our school a brighter place.”

Fellow teacher and close friend Elaine Spurlock reflected on Whitaker’s courage and determination, saying she set an example for everyone at Manchester Elementary.

“The legacy she left for the staff and kids is that no matter how hard your job or your health gets, you push through and keep going,” Spurlock said. “She was there and worked days that most people wouldn’t even roll out of bed for over the last three years.”

Throughout her career, Whitaker also coached basketball, mentoring young athletes with the same passion she brought to the classroom. Her former students and players remember her as someone who taught lessons that went far beyond sports — lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and heart.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time.
