Each week, The Manchester Enterprise will feature stories from local car enthusiasts and the vehicles that mean the most to them. Behind every classic ride, hot rod, or custom build, there’s often a powerful personal story—and we want to help share them.
If you have a car or truck that holds special meaning, we’d love to hear about it. Text Mark Berry at 606-813-1541 or message him on Facebook to share your story and photos.
This week we kick off the series with Carl Roberts.
“My car is a 1968 Plymouth Sports Fury. Back in 1995, I decided I wanted to buy a convertible. It took me two years to find the right one for me. But, eventually, I found my yellow convertible at a car lot in Clinton, Tennessee. When I first bought it, I wanted to know more about the people who owned it before me. I did some research, and I discovered that a woman in Daytona, Florida was the original owner of the car. Unfortunately, she had passed away by the time I purchased the car. However, I was able to speak to her husband. He told me their story, and how him and his wife used to drive their kids on the beach in Daytona. Once I heard that story, I knew I had to bring this car back to Daytona once again. So, in 2017, I traveled to Daytona, Florida, and drove my yellow convertible along the beach. It was the same beach that carried its original owner and her family. I felt proud to know that I was able to return the car to its original home, even if it was only for a brief period of time. This car not only played an important role in that family in Florida, but in mine as well. I drove my oldest granddaughter through a graduation parade in Laurel County, since she graduated during Covid and wasn’t allowed to have a traditional graduation ceremony. My youngest granddaughter always talked about being drove to prom in my convertible since she was a little girl. In these past two years for her junior and senior prom, her dream became reality. I drove her through her prom parade in Clay County for both of her proms. I am so grateful that my car has been an extremely important part of my family for so many years. Even though I have owned this car for twenty eight years, I will never be tired of cruising down the road in it. My favorite memory with my car was the day I went on a picnic. I will always treasure every memory with my car, from the big life events like prom and graduation, to the small things like cruising along beaches and driving to picnics.” - Carol Roberts.
