An Alabama man employed as a contract postal worker for the U.S. Postal Service has pleaded guilty after authorities discovered hundreds of pieces of undelivered mail inside his apartment.
Timothy Chandler, 23, pleaded guilty to delay or destruction of mail, according to federal court documents.
Authorities said Chandler worked a delivery route serving homes and businesses in the Robertsdale area.
The investigation began last November after Robertsdale police responded to complaints involving a large amount of undelivered mail discovered inside an apartment recently rented by Chandler.
According to Chandler’s written plea agreement, investigators found enough mail to fill approximately eight postal bins.
Police reported discovering mail scattered throughout the apartment, including on the living room floor, beneath chair cushions, inside the stove, on top of cabinets and even inside the refrigerator.
Authorities also recovered additional mail stuffed inside trash bags, while several greeting cards sent through the mail had reportedly been opened.
Investigators further located 66 empty postal bins inside the residence.
Chandler now faces a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison. However, prosecutors have agreed to recommend leniency as part of the plea agreement.
Sentencing has been scheduled for Aug. 31 before a federal judge.
