Attorney General Russell Coleman announced today action from the Office resulted in a life sentence recommendation for a man charged with killing two family members.
Greg Jackson, 45, previously pleaded guilty to one count of Murder (Capital Offense), one count of Manslaughter First Degree (Class B Felony), one count of Burglary Second Degree (Class C Felony) and one count of Tampering with Physical Evidence (Class D Felony). On Tuesday, a Clay County jury recommended a life sentence.
In November 2015, Jackson attended a court hearing in which his father, Leon Jackson, sought and was granted an Emergency Protective Order against him. After leaving court, Jackson went to the Manchester home his father shared with his stepmother, Shirley Jackson, and fatally shot the couple. Their bodies were discovered 14 days later by their family pastor. Jackson shot his father two times and his stepmother 11 times.
The following month, Greg Jackson was arrested in violation of his parole. He was still in custody when he was indicted for the murders.
“Patricide is heinous. The recommended life sentence reflects the gravity of the slayings and holds this killer accountable,” said Attorney General Coleman.
The Kentucky State Police investigated the case. Tim Cocanougher, the Director of the Attorney General’s Special Prosecutions Unit, prosecuted the case on behalf of the Commonwealth. Robyn Diez d'Aux, the Director of the Office of Victims Advocacy, provided services to the victims’ family.
The court scheduled final sentencing for November 30th.
