Calvin Smith Calvin Smith

Calvin Smith, age 90 of Brownsville, went to be with the lord on January 17, 2024 at his home in Brownsville, IN. Calvin was born on January 25, 1933 in Clay County, Kentucky and is the 4th of 14 children born to Ed and Matilda "Tildy" Smith.

Calvin spent his childhood throughout Kentucky living in Clay County, Kentucky and East Bernstadt, KY. Only four days at the age of 18, he married the love of his life and mother of his children, Mary Magdaline Inman Smith in Laurel County, Kentucky on January 29, 1951. Calvin and Mary soon after relocated to the Brownsville Community where they would raise their five children. They purchased their farm in Brownsville in September 1965 where he remained and worked his land until his peaceful passing surrounded by family and friends.

Calvin's faith was one of the things that defined him. He dedicated over 71 years to the Brownsville Chapel in Brownsville, IN serving as an elder and teaching Sunday school.

Calvin was not afraid of work. Working at various factories in the area, he eventually went to work at Roots Dresser in Connersville where he served more than 38 years retiring in 1998. All the while, he was raising cattle on his farm. There was not a trade Calvin could not do. Friends and family would often call on him for help, and he welcomed it. He had a talent for fixing and repairing things. While Calvin's work was important to him, nothing meant more to him than his family. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren dearly and treasured the time spent with each one. Calvin would often remark that the Lord had blessed him over the years. Everyone who knew Calvin felt blessed by his friendship.

Calvin will be greatly missed his daughters, Donna Wilson and Debra Smith (Greg) Spurlock; a son, David (JoAnn) Smith; six grandchildren – Angelicque McQueen, Jason (Cami) Smith, Erin (Andy) Grimes, Katherine (Mike) Parrett, Kenneth (Amy) Spurlock, and Keith Spurlock; 15 great grandchildren; two sisters – Mae Ola Eversole and Jackie Gabbard; and several nieces and nephews.
