Laurel County, KY — A Manchester man was taken into custody Saturday evening following an assault complaint that escalated into a confrontation with law enforcement on KY 30, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Deputies Daniel Reed and Jared Hale responded to a dispatch call from the London–Laurel County 911 Communication Center at approximately 7:21 p.m. on May 10. The call initially involved a report of an assault with injury off Roy Black Road.

While en route, deputies were advised that one of the individuals involved had left the scene and was reportedly standing in the middle of KY 30, roughly eight miles north of London. Upon arrival, deputies located a male subject—later identified as 68-year-old Edward Bowling of Manchester—standing in the roadway.

Deputies safely escorted Bowling off the road, but he soon began causing a disturbance. During a brief struggle, deputies were able to detain him. However, while being escorted to the patrol vehicle, Bowling allegedly kicked Deputy Hale in the right forearm, causing injury.

Bowling was arrested and charged with:

  • Public intoxication (controlled substances)

  • Disorderly conduct, second degree

  • Resisting arrest

  • Assault, third degree (police officer is the victim)

He was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
