Irene Griffin, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away on February 25, 2025, at the age of 88, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on February 14, 1937, in Clay County, Kentucky, Irene was a woman whose life was defined by her unwavering faith, her dedication to her family, and her passion for the simple joys of life.
Irene was the cherished daughter of the late Mark and Mattie Mathis Anderson. She was the beloved wife of Earl Griffin, with whom she shared a remarkable journey of 67 years until his passing. Together, they built a legacy of love that continues to resonate through their family. Irene was also preceded in death by her sisters, Margie Castle and Gearldine Ward, and a great grandchild, Lena Brooks.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Scotty (Ronnie) Abney and Tena (Jeff) Gabbard. Irene's role as a grandmother was one of her greatest joys, and she leaves behind her adored granddaughters, Shelby (Mark) Brooks and Sydni (Rick) Childers. Her great-grandchildren, Griffin Brooks, Lilly Brooks, Hiram Childers, and Raleigh Childers, will carry forward her legacy of love and kindness, and the family joyfully anticipates the arrival of great-grandchild Miller Brooks.
Irene's life was a testament to her loving nature and her kind spirit. For over 50 years, she taught Sunday school at Liberty Avenue Baptist Church, touching the lives of countless individuals with her wisdom and compassion.
A creative soul, Irene found great pleasure in making cards and crafts. Her love for the outdoors was evident to anyone who spent time with her, as she cherished the beauty of flowers and the tranquility of the beach.

Funeral services will be held at Lakes Funeral Home on Friday, February 28, 2025, at 1pm with Pastor Ken Felty officiating. Burial will follow at Berea Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11:30am until the time of service. Pallbearers will be Jeff Gabbard, Ronnie Abney, Mark Brooks, Rick Childers, and Griffin Brooks. Honorary bearers will be Travis Ward, Lilly Brooks, Hiram Childers, and Raleigh Childers.
