Carolyn Gay

Carolyn Gay, known to many as Nana, age 76 of Oneida, KY passed away Tuesday January 28th, 2025, at Continue Care in Corbin, KY.

Carolyn was born June 9th, 1948, the daughter of the late Jasper and Hallie (Collins) Peters.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, James “Sonny” Gay; her brothers: Ralph Peters and Raleigh Peters; her sisters Bonnie Peters, Gladys Knochglman, and Essie Bowling; and infant sisters: Edna and Maude Peters.

Carolyn is survived by her children: Russell and wife Mary Beth Gay, and Robin and husband Jennings Combs, all of Oneida, KY. She leaves behind her grandchildren, who made her Nana: Kara Combs, Sydney Gay, Walt David Combs, and Haley Martin; and her great-grandson, Joshua Sutton Scott Mathis. Her sister, Irene Bowling, and brother, J L Peters and wife Donna. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends; and by two special friends, Wilma Nunn and Darlene Gay.

Carolyn was a member of the Brutus Baptist Church. She served on the board of Kentucky Mountain Housing and was a member of Eastern Star. She was best known as Nana, not only to her grandchildren, but to many others too. She never met a stranger, always smiling, she could and would start a conversation with anyone. She loved to read, crossword puzzles, outings with family and friends, and of course game shows. Jeopardy was her fav, you knew not to call when it was Jeopardy time. She loved her family, especially those grandkids, friends and community deeply. She will forever be loved and missed, but we know she is now healthy and rejoicing with Dad and all those gone before her.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 1st at Britton Funeral Home, with David Robinson and Jonathan Owens officiating. Burial will follow at the Peters Family Cemetery in Oneida.

Visitation will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday, January 31st at Britton Funeral Home.
