Statement Victory- Clay downs South Laurel
(MANCHESTER, Ky.) – After being punched in the mouth on the road by the Cardinals, Clay County (13-4) punched back in a big way, defeating South Laurel 63-58 to win the Bobby Keith Classic on Saturday night.
Multiple Tigers sank crucial free throws to the wire, and maybe none more significant than sophomore Adon Grubb’s with seven seconds remaining to pull away from the ever-resilient Cardinals.
Grubb led the Tigers with 18 points and 10 rebounds, completing yet another double-double in a season where he firmly established himself as one of the 13th region’s top players. He also believes this game was a statement win for the Tigers.
“I think getting this win over them (South Laurel) was a huge statement for Clay County,” said Grubb. “We went into this one very excited and ready to prove a point.”
South Laurel decimated the Tigers 70-47 on the road in the second game of the year.
“We didn’t knock down shots we normally do in that first game against them, and our rebounding effort was not there,” added Grubb. “Tonight, we knew we had to jump on them fast and get control of the game. Once we got on them early, we never looked back. It was a great win for us, and we loved the environment our fans created and great coaching from our entire staff.”
Clay County led 18-13 after the first quarter, followed by the Tigers carrying a tight 33-29 lead into the half, a lead which they never relinquished. Ethan Jackson had a strong game, pouring in 14 points, while Aiden Wagers added 10 points and six rebounds. Grayson Hooker sank two huge threes and finished with eight points, while seniors Jerrod Roark and Landon Dezarn each added five points as well as crucial defense.
Coach Michael Jones was thrilled with his team's growth since the first meeting with the Cardinals, as well as their effort and the atmosphere during Saturday night’s game.
“We have continued to work on our individual and team effort in practice, along with committing to the defensive end,” said Jones. “Our kids have made tremendous strides in not letting what may or may not happen on the offensive end affect our focus and effort on the defensive end. Before the game, we wrote one thing on the board: ‘The tougher team will win,’ and tonight we exemplified toughness.”
Jones also felt it was a total team win, as everyone contributed to the win, from the fans to the bottom of the bench.
“Everyone who played tonight contributed in a major way for us, and that’s what being a team is all about,” said Jones. “We have things to get cleaned up, especially on the glass. We will continue to work and get better as we go on.”
Coach Jones also wanted to thank Tiger Nation for providing the players a fantastic environment.
“I can’t speak highly enough about our Tiger Tribe student section, our cheerleaders, and Tiger nation as a whole,” said Jones. “The entire season, they have continued to show up and show out while creating an atmosphere that only Tiger basketball fans can do. We are very appreciative. We also want to extend our thoughts and prayers to Josh Steele, his family, team, and coaches!”
