Historical Society Fall Walking Tours set; book now!
If you love history make plans now to participate in the Clay County Historical Soceity’s Fall Walking Tour of Courthouse Hill.
Description
A perfect adventure for locals and out-of-towners who love Clay County history, are fascinated with “the feuds,” and cannot wait to meet a few of Manchester’s legendary characters – yes, this tour includes live actors!
Rev. John J. Dickey will be along for commentary as we wind our way around Courthouse Hill on an adventure that will last approximately 1½ hours. We will begin at the famed Reid-White Cemetery – the final resting place of “Big Jim” Howard, Deputy Sheriff Will White, and well-known hotel keeper, John A. Webb. There will also be stops at the Old Jail, the courthouse yard where Tom Baker was shot, and the site of Sheriff Bev White’s home.
As we stroll through the Manchester Historic District we will pause at the town’s first bank, follow in the footsteps of Pitt Stivers on his last walk to town, and encounter the talented but eccentric, Henry Faulkner.
