Bridge dedicated in memory of Christopher Hubbard

Sen. Brandon Storm joined the family and friends of Christopher Hubbard this weekend for a bridge-naming ceremony to honor his life. The bridge, located on KY Highway 192 near the CSX railroad bridge at mile point 21.030 in Laurel County, was dedicated in honor of Hubbard, who tragically passed away on Feb. 25, 2016, in a car accident. A provision of Senate Joint Resolution 58, sponsored by Storm with local officials' support officially dedicated the "Christopher Hubbard Memorial Bridge."

The dedication ceremony occurred at the London-Laurel Rescue Squad, where Hubbard volunteered.

Hubbard was a dedicated community servant and scholar, deeply rooted in the Appalachian wilderness where he was born and raised. His passion for the environment and community service was evident early on.

As a young child, his favorite color was forest green, which he attributed to the abundance of green in nature. He remarked, "Look around. Everything is green. God must love green!"

During high school, Chris joined the 4H club, serving as treasurer and leading local clean-up community service projects. He also competed in the state Envirothon, gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation for the environment. Chris's commitment to education was unwavering; he was a straight-A student who took advanced classes and even started college a year early at Somerset Community College. His dedication to helping others succeed academically was one of his most notable traits.

Hubbard's community service extended to his work as a volunteer firefighter with the Laurel/London Fire Rescue. He participated in ride-alongs and assisted in various capacities, including creating layouts and acting in the fire department's annual haunted house fundraiser. Chris also planned to join the United States Air Force, demonstrating his commitment to serving his country.

Hubbard's legacy is marked by his academic excellence, community service, and boundless generosity. His family, friends, and the community he cherished continue to mourn his absence, but take solace in the lasting impact of his life and achievements.
